Waterloo: Quantum Valley

For companies looking to incorporate quantum technologies into their product or processes, there's no better location than Waterloo.

Waterloo is at the epicentre of the quantum revolution, with 16 companies and over 250 researchers specializing in quantum cryptography, software, communication and consulting.

Our complete theory-to-commercialization quantum ecosystem is supported by a unique collection of commercialization and investment organizations. This makes Waterloo a perfect place for companies investigating quantum technologies and building teams of quantum experts.

Here is Waterloo’s quantum technology ecosystem in a nutshell:

What are our quantum technology ecosystem advantages?

Waterloo is home to two of the world’s largest quantum and theoretical physics research centres – Perimeter Institute and the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. Being one of Canada’s most innovative regions, three factors give us a quantum edge over the competition:

  1. Commercialize research in Waterloo, a global leader in quantum theory, and access the world’s top quantum commercialization research centres.
  2. Fill your talent pipeline with Canada’s highest-quality tech talent, fueled by the best post-secondary institutions, including the University of Waterloo, ranked top 25 in the world for computer science.
  3. Tap into the future of quantum technology in one of the top quantum research and technology countries. Canada leads the G7 nations in per capita spending on quantum research.

What major quantum technology players are located here?

Waterloo houses numerous companies working in quantum, including:

  • Single Quantum Systems
  • Evolution
  • ISARA
  • Aegis Quantum
  • Quantum Benchmark
  • UQ Devices
  • QEYnet

What organizations support our quantum industry?

Waterloo’s quantum ecosystem is supported by many research institutions such as:

  1. Institute for Quantum Computing – Located in the University of Waterloo, IQC is one of the world’s largest quantum technology institutes. IQC has many core research areas likes quantum computing, sensing and material.
  2. Perimeter Institute – Located in the region, this research facility is the world’s largest independent theoretical physics research hub with research focused on quantum fields and strings, quantum foundations, quantum gravity and much more.
  3. Transformative Quantum Technologies (TQT) – an offshoot of the Institute for Quantum Computing, TQT is a program at the University of Waterloo that aims to advance the use of quantum mechanics from laboratory curiosity to impactful device. In other words, they’re taking quantum theory and turning it into quantum products.
  4. Quantum Valley Investments (QVI) – An organization created by BlackBerry executives Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, QVI is focused on the commercialization of breakthrough quantum information technologies. The Quantum Valley Investment Fund provides commercialization funding, expertise and support to develop quantum breakthroughs that will lead to commercializable technologies and applications.
