This month’s top news stories really highlight why so many companies choose Waterloo for their expansions, with global rankings and manufacturing achievements contributing to major milestones.

Here are the top stories from July 2022:

CBRE names Waterloo the #1 small tech talent market in North America

For the second consecutive year, CBRE has identified Waterloo as the #1 small tech talent market in North America. The top-50 markets in in the Unites States and Canada were ranked according to their competitive advantages and appeal to both employers and employees. The report highlights Waterloo’s fast-growing graduate and millennial populations, high degree of tech worker concentration and significant cost advantages.

UWaterloo garners more global accolades

Yet another ranking suggests the University of Waterloo is one of the world’s best universities, but this time, it’s in subjects that might surprise you. QS University Rankings has recognized UWaterloo for tech and engineering programs in the past, but now the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has the school ranked globally for Hospitality and Tourism Management (#21), Transportation Science and Technology (#28), Water Resources research (#34) and much more.

NASA Webb telescope uses tech built in Waterloo

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) launched on Christmas Day 2021 as the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. Capable of peering into the earliest moments of our university, the first images made global headlines when they were released in July.

Some of the JWST’s most important and advanced technology – the camera, guidance system and image stabilizer –were developed here in Waterloo Region at Honeywell Aerospace.

Waterloo to host a summit on aviation and aerospace

On October 5, 2022, the University of Waterloo and the Region of Waterloo will be hosting a Sustainable Aeronautics Summit at the Region’s International Airport.

Lead by the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA), this event will profile world-leading sustainable aeronautical research, technology, and education to create a unique ecosystem to accelerate sustainable innovations in air transportation. The University of Waterloo is not only home to Canada’s largest engineering school, but it has the largest university-led aviation program in Canada.

Waterloo ranked no. 5 among Canada's best small cities 

According to a new bestcities.org report, the City of Waterloo is ranked 5th among Canada’s best cities with a population under 200,000. Resonance Consultancy, a business advisory firm based in Vancouver has ranked these top 25 cities by six categories: place, product, programming, people, prosperity, and promotion.

Eight California companies growing in Waterloo

Waterloo is a magnet for tech companies looking to grow. It might be about our talent – the University of Waterloo is one of the world’s best and biggest tech schools – or our ecosystem. It might be about cost advantages, research support or a combination of these factors.

As a result, our community is also home to many California-based companies, including some of the world’s largest tech companies and major international brands.
