This month was all about tech, with tech expansions, reports, comparisons, funding and more making headlines in Waterloo.

Here are the top stories from June 2022:

Google continues expanding in downtown Kitchener

Google continues to build new space in Waterloo to meet the needs of its rapidly growing workforce. With over 1,400 employees in downtown Kitchener the internet giant is building a new 11-floor and 130,000 square feet building that will eventually house as many as 3,000 employees.

Accelerator Centre secures $10 million for AC:Studio 

Kitchener-Waterloo based Accelerator Centre (AC) secured a $10 million CAD investment from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev). Using this funding the AC will launch AC:Studio – a program for supporting early-stage start-ups across southern Ontario, providing 100 startups with $100,000 in seed funding before March 2025.

Startup Genome report highlights Toronto-Waterloo startup success

Startup Genome’s annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report has recognized Toronto-Waterloo as the top startup ecosystem in Canada, #8 in North America and #17 globally.

 

The report highlights the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor as North America’s fastest growing and third-largest innovation ecosystem, with the world’s highest concentration of artificial intelligence startups. It’s also home to one of the world’s fastest growing millennial populations – growing at more than 21% per year – and among the highest quality talent you’ll find anywhere.

35 Canadian tech companies on path to $1 billion in annual revenue

According to a new data-based initiative from Communitech, as many as 35 privately held tech start-ups are on the way to reaching $1 billion in annual revenue.

The list includes Waterloo- and San Francisco-based wholesale marketplace  Faire, edtech firm ApplyBoard, and more. 

Waterloo companies take centre stage at Collision 

More than 35,000 attendees and 600+ speakers converged on downtown Toronto for the 2022 edition of Collision – one of the world’s biggest tech conferences. Speakers from Waterloo took centre stage, including Alley Newman from Vidyard, Martin Basiri from ApplyBoard, Matt Rendall from Otto Motors and Mila Banerjee from Pronti.

Quality and quantity. We were curious to see which university balances quantity and quality best. We used the world’s top-25 computer science programs from the 2022 QS University Rankings, found their enrollment numbers and – voilà – got our answer.

University of Waterloo is highly competitive, continuing to produce huge numbers of incredible graduates.
