A complete theory-to-commercialization quantum ecosystem
Known as “Quantum Valley,” Waterloo is a world-leader in the development of quantum technologies, including quantum computing, communication, security and sensing. The presence of world-class quantum theory, experimentation and commercialization centres within a 3km/2mi radius makes our community unique on the world stage.
Together, these organizations have attracted more than $1.5 billion in public and private investment over the last 20 years.
In Waterloo you’ll find:
-
Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics – the world’s largest independent theoretical physics research hub, Perimeter Institute has researchers working in quantum matter, quantum information, quantum fields and strings, quantum gravity and quantum foundations
-
The Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) – part of the University of Waterloo, IQC is a world-renowned quantum experimentation facility that focuses on quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum materials
-
Quantum Valley Investments (QVI) – a quantum technology commercialization incubator created by BlackBerry founders Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, QVI leverages a $100 million quantum venture fund to help develop quantum companies
A growing quantum business community
Waterloo’s research capacity has given the ecosystem a headstart on developing a quantum technology business community. We currently have at least 16 companies working in quantum cryptography, quantum software, quantum communication and quantum consulting, as well as a support ecosystem uniquely suited to helping these companies grow.
Our ecosystem also has the capacity to work with companies looking to incorporate quantum technologies into their operations or develop new quantum products. Quantum threats to banking, insurance, defence and other high-security industries will only continue to rise.
