The University of Waterloo has been ranked in the top-25 tech universities in the world. Find out how it stacks up against other well-known schools.

The University of Waterloo is once again one of the world’s top-25 computer science schools according to the renowned Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.

Coming in at #22, the university has moved up three spots over last year and remains one of the world’s best and biggest tech universities. This ranking puts it ahead of well-known American technology schools like Columbia University (#23), California Institute of Technology (#36) and the University of Texas at Austin (#36) – and just behind Cornell University (#17) and Princeton University (#13).

The ranking also puts the University of Waterloo ahead of some of the wider world’s top tech schools, including University College London (#24) and the Technical University of Munich (#29). Only 12 universities in the world outside the United States were ranked higher than the University of Waterloo.

Computer science wasn’t the only Waterloo story in this year’s QS rankings. The University of Waterloo also ranked 29th in electrical and electronic engineering – ahead of Cornell University (#35) and Eindhoven University of Technology (#44) – and 43rd in mathematics.

The university’s top subject area continues to be in engineering and technology, with top-100 standings in electrical and electronic engineering, civil and structural engineering, mechanical, aeronautic and manufacturing engineering and chemical engineering. The University of Waterloo is routinely ranked #1 for engineering in Canada and is home to the largest engineering school in Canada with approximately 10,000 students.

In total, the university had three programs rank in the global top-50 and 13 rank in the global top-100.
