Waterloo Breaks Ground on Laser Research Centre
The University of Waterloo has officially begun construction on North America’s first and only infrared free electron laser research facility. WaterFEL is set to open in 2028 and promises to transform research in physics, chemistry and material science, offering new methods for studying ultrafast processes and advancing science and technology. This October, the University of Waterloo ranked second in Canada and 27th globally on Fast Company’s Ignition Schools 2025 list. This list recognizes the top 50 schools that are driving innovation and shaping our future economy through research, startups and industry partnerships. Transforming Brain Imaging in Canada
On October 7th, Kitchener-based company, Vena Medical, received Health Canada clearance for its MicroAngioscope, the world’s smallest medical camera capable of going inside the brain’s smallest blood vessels.
The camera provides real-time, high-resolution, full-colour imaging and was designed to help physicians identify vascular obstructions more accurately. FluidAI Drives Innovation in Post-Operative Care
Co-founded by a Waterloo alum and based in Kitchener, FluidAI is redefining post-operative care with AI-powered monitoring. Their technology aims to help surgeons detect complications faster and improve surgical recovery.
After receiving FDA clearance at the end of September, FluidAI has been actively advancing their technology and expanding their global presence throughout October. Building Waterloo’s Med-Tech Future
Waterloo city councillors and the Accelerator Centre took a huge step this October to grow the region’s med-tech ecosystem. Together, they’ve launched a three-year program to support up to 45 med-tech startups, with the goal of positioning Waterloo Region as a national leader in digital health innovation. Perimeter Institute Celebrates 25 Years
The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is celebrating 25 years of advancing quantum research and education. The institute has made significant contributions to theoretical physics, cosmology and quantum computing, including helping develop the technology behind the first image of a black hole.
